HTML – Hyper Text Markup Language, is a special markup (standard text-encoding) language used to create web pages.  This language tells the browsers that how to display text, images, animations and other contents of a text document on the web-page according to the symbols inserted.  It also tells the browser, to make interactive web-pages through  hyper links. 

In other words, HTML is neither a word processing tool nor a programming language. It is simply a  page  layout and  hyperlink specification  language. It describes the structure of a document.
